Plenty of careers and reputations have been ruined due to insensitive or ignorant use of other peoples' history and cultural objects, and in most cases, rarely does the people group have any say in how they are portrayed by dominant society regarding cultural appropriation.
Stuart Hall is a communication theorist who speaks at length about the flow of knowledge and discourse and how this correlates to power. He describes the West as being a "system of representation" in which identity is understood by being different to something, or by not being something. This allows the West to enforce inequalities and describe things as Western and Other.
